Marking ledges:

Ledges are formed in many different way, they could be areas that existed before the reservoir was impounded. They can also be formed on lakes from erosion and wave action and fluctuating lake levels.

Ledges are areas were fish will often concentrate. The key to fishing these ledges successfully is to locate the sweet spot on the ledge. When you observe any sudden change in depth you may want to investigate it. For example, you are graphing in 8 foot of water and the depth drops to 14 foot and levels out for a few yards and then drops again. This is probably a ledge, now you want to find the sweet spot on this ledge.

First mark the ledge where it changes depth from 8 foot to 14 foot, then continue to graph the ledge out or in marking it about every 50 feet or so with your WayPoint Markers. You want to get a visual of how the ledge is shaped and if it is on a point or a ridge. You should keep a close eye on your graph while graphing looking for a change in the bottom thickness on you graph, (narrow bottom indicates hard bottom). You also want to look for brush, points or large rocks, these areas are usually the sweet spot on ledges.

Mark about 100 yards and get the visual of the underwater ledge, locate the sweet spot, and again you have found the fish. You may need to pick up your first 2 or 3 WayPoint Markers and repeat the process until you locate the sweet spot (critical area) on the ledge.

PRADCO bass fishing pro Jimmy Mason of Rogersville, Alabama explains the importance and functionality of marker buoys. Jimmy lists them as one of the most important pieces of equipment he couldn't be on the water without having them in his boat!
